Issue

In Vertically Expanding menus, menu items can only be activated using Mouse Click, not Mouse Over.

In the Submenus appear on setting, Mouse Over can not be selected.

Solution

There is a good reason why you can't use Mouse Over for this type of menu.

For example, if you have a Vertically Expanding menu with two levels: top-level items and submenu blocks. Being a Vertically Expanding menu, submenus open downwards, pushing the other top-level items down too.

Imagine if you were moving the cursor downwards over the menu to reach the third item down in the top level.

This is easy to do when the submenus only open on Click because the menu item you wish to click on doesn't move.

However, if the submenus opened on Mouse Over, every single submenu block would be opening and closing as you move the mouse downwards. This would make the item you want to click on move up and down too. Your menu would be opening and closing seemingly out of control.

In trials we found this behavior to be annoying, unintuitive and therefore unusable, so we removed it.

If you want your menu open on mouse over, an alternative is to use a cascading menu with the top-level block set to vertical orientation. The easiest way to do this is:

  1. switch to Global mode in the menu editor
  2. change the menu type to Cascading
  3. change the Submenus appear on option to Mouse Over

You may need to fine-tune the position of the submenus after doing this.
