Importing a folder of files to create a GoLive site

These instructions show how to import a folder of files on your hard drive to create a GoLive site.

You may already have a folder of web pages and images that you have created outside of GoLive.

You can create a GoLive site and import these files so you can then manage the site using GoLive and use MenuMachine successfully.

Your files can remain in their existing hierarchical order (files/folders within folders), but you must be able to locate and import the top level folder which contains all the other files and folders.

1) Begin by locating and making a copy of the folder of files you wish to import on your hard drive.
Let's call this copy Web Pages.

2) Make a folder which will become the holding place for the folders GoLive will create.
Let's call it Web Site.

3) Move the folder Web Pages into folder Web Site

4) Open GoLive. Go to File > New Site

In GoLive CS2 the command and wizard items to create a new site from a folder are:

File > New > Site > Create Site > Site from Existing Content > From a Local Folder of Existing FilesThe GoLive site wizard will take you through the steps of importing the site.

5) (The following wizard is for CS) The first screen of the wizard choose Single user. Click Next >.

6) On the second screen choose Import from Folder. Click Next >.

7) First Browse Button:
Choose the folder Web Pages (the one that contains the files).

Second Browse Button:
Choose the home page of the site which is inside Web Pages.

8) Choose where you want to save the .site file.
This should be inside Web Site, at the same level as Web Pages.
Name the file Web Site.site. Click Finish.

9) GoLive will now open the site and you can see the files in the folder /Web Pages/ (root folder) in the left pane of the site window.
Now you can begin working in GoLive and start using MenuMachine.

IMPORTANT:

The finished folder structure should look like this:
Note that there is sometimes a backup.site file created automatically.
This image also shows some files inside Web Pages or web-content to indicate where your previous pages would be found in GL6 or GLCS by default.

 GoLive 6.x:  GoLive CS:

Do not change the folder structure or move files around inside your site UNLESS you are doing so in GoLive with the .site file open.

The .site file keeps track of changes within the site and can only be updated when the changes (adding/deleting/editing files) are made inside GoLive. Changes made outside GoLive may cause links to break and other serious problems.

MenuMachine requires that the .site file be open in GoLive and up-to-date. If you do need to make any changes outside of GoLive, such as adding files to the site, make sure when you next look at the site in GoLive, click in the left pane of the site window and use the Refresh View button in the GoLive toolbar to update the .site.
