Wrapping or indenting text, special characters

Wrapping Text

It is very simple to wrap text in a menu item.

You do not need to edit any source code but you do need to enter a line break tag <br> into the text where you would like the break to occur.

If we want to put the following text in a menu item, with line breaks as shown:

Motor vehicles such
as cars have the
highest emission levels
of the modes of
transport in this list.

we would type this into the Menu Text field:

Motor vehicles such<br>as cars have the<br>highest emission levels<br>of the modes of<br>transport in this list.

You may find it easier to type the text in a text editor (or on your page somewhere) and then copy and paste the text into the field in the MenuMachine Inspector so you can more easily see how the text will break.

This won't preview in GoLive but it will preview and work in browsers.

An example of a menu using wrapping is below.

Note: Remember to allow plenty of extra height and width in the menu item to accommodate any font changes on various systems and platforms.
These slight differences will exaggerated with multiple lines of text and/or long lines of text.

Indenting Text

To indent text for all top level menu items or all submenus items, you would normally use the Format Tab > Text Options > Left Xpx field to enter in an offset from the left of the menu box.

However, if you only want particular menu items to be indented, or vary the indent amount on individual menu items, you may enter non-breaking spaces before the menu text (Normal spaces will not work).

You need to enter the HTML entity for a non-breaking space, which is &nbsp;, into the Menu Text field.

So if you wanted a menu indented by two spaces then you would type:

&nbsp;&nbsp;My Menu Item

This will look odd in GoLive but should display properly in the browser.

Special Characters

Sometimes you may want to enter a special character (HTML entity) into the menu item. Some characters can be typed in used the key combination to create that character.

For example: to enter a ö you would type Option +u, o (Mac) or copy the letter from the Windows Character map into the Menu Text field.

Other characters are not recognized by GoLive and must be typed in using the text that would appear in Source code for that character. In these cases simply type the HTML entity in the Menu Text field. They will not show as the correct special character in GoLive but will show correctly in the browser.

For example: to enter a ý you would type &yacute; into the Menu Text field.
