The "Mark of the Web" fix for XP SP2 previewing issues

This page describes a solution for the security warning displayed when pages containing active content are previewed in Internet Explorer under Windows XP Service Pack 2. Click here for more information about this problem.

There is another solution to the security warning issue and that is to add a special comment tag to your web pages. The comment tag looks like this:

<!-- saved from url=(0013)about:internet -->

This should be placed between the <head></head> tags.

This special comment tag is called the Mark of the Web. It basically identifies the page as having been saved from an online web site.

The number in parentheses is the number of characters in the text which follows the parentheses.

If you like, you can add this tag manually to your pages. Any page which contains the Mark of the Web will not trigger the security warning in IE6.

The easy method: use our free extension

We have created a free extension for GoLive CS which you can download and install.

This extension will not alter your pages (unless you want it to), instead it intercepts the preview page that is sent to the browser and adds the Mark of the Web on-the-fly.

This means that you get the best of both worlds: your pages can remain free of extraneous code but they will also preview in Internet Explorer without triggering the security warning.

Download the Mark of the Web extension v1.3 here (1.1kB)

To install the extension, first decompress the .zip file which will create a folder called Mark of the Web.

Copy this folder into your GoLive CS > Modules > Extend Scripts folder. The GoLive folder is your GoLive application folder.

The Extend Scripts folder is usually located here:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\GoLive CS_ENG\Modules\Extend Scripts\

If your copy of GoLive uses a non-English localization then the "ENG" in the path will be replaced by your localization code.

All you have to do now is re-launch GoLive and the extension will be active.

The Mark of the Web extension affect pages that are sent to preview in the browser. When you click GoLive's "Preview in browser" button, the extension intercepts the page and adds the "Mark of the Web" before the browser sees the page. Your pages are not actually modified, only the pages that the local browser sees are. You do not need to do anything to make this happen automatically.

However, you might want to permanently add the Mark of the Web to your pages. The new version (1.3) adds a new "Insert Mark of the Web" menu under the Special menu. This will insert the Mark of the Web in your page.

GoLive 6.0.1. users: You may use this extension as long as you use the "Insert Mark of the Web" menu under the Special menu. You must use this while in Layout View only. GoLive 6.0.1 does not have the ability to intercept pages before preview so the automatic function will not work.
