Troubleshooting

Some people using Windows browsers can't see my menu. They are using ad blocking software such as Norton Internet Security.

Norton Internet Security has ad-blocking features that are designed to prevent web advertising being displayed on web pages.

If a user has ad-blocking turned on and the security software detects JavaScript that it thinks may be displaying advertising, it stops that JavaScript from functioning. This can, in some circumstances, stop DHTML menus (like MenuMachine) from working.

Norton Internet Security uses an extremely crude method of keyword matching to determine whether or not a block of JavaScript code contains advertising links.

A page with a URL containing 'ad' may even be blocked.

This excerpt is from a technical document on the Symantec site:

Technical Information:

Norton Internet Security maintains a list of more than 200 HTML strings that are associated with advertisements.

For example, Norton Internet Security prevents Web pages whose URL includes www.ad.siemens.com from being displayed because the URL includes the HTML string "AD".

Solution: Change certain keywords or 'HTML Strings' that the software has detected.

Obviously, you can't ask everyone to turn off the ad-blocking feature of their security software. You can, however, change your menu so that it does not reference pages or media files that may trigger the ad-blocking software.

We don't have an exhaustive list of keywords used by Norton Internet Security but the type of words that we know trigger this problem are those that contain 'ad', 'advertisement', 'sponsor', 'banner' etc.

You should avoid using words containing these keywords when naming pages, menu items, images, names of frames etc.

If your page is being blocked, change any names that may be construed as being linked to advertising. Re-upload and refresh your cache to see if you have removed the offending names.

Here are some example links that may cause this problem:

../pages/display_ad.html
../../company/sponsors.html
